Proper etiquette demands you apologize to the dog and then shoot it. If you can shoot the owner, no apology is required

Trap the offending dog. Call animal control to pick it up.

No it is not the dogs fault. Send a bill to the dogs owner for the livestock.

Obviously, the animal is a threat to property and livestock. The normal thing to do in cases like this is put him down easy with a 12 gauge to the head and use whats left as ferilizer.

Do not shoot the dog because it is just acting on instincts. I used to have a malamute and german shepherd mix and it would always escape our yard and go into some guys back yard and kill his chickens. My dog would always bring home a dead chicken and leave it on the porch like he was giving it to the family because he wanted to share his kill with us. My neighbor came over and said my dog killed all his chickens and I had to pay like 8 bucks a piece for them, but it was worth it because my dog was happy. I had to buy the guy like 8 new chickens, but if your neighbor does not want to pay for them, then you should sue him, but never hurt the dog because it does not no any better, plus God will get mad at you for killing a dog.

Hate to break it to you teamjesus_ca, but it is not a dog’s primal instinct to kill livestock. A wolf’s, yes. But not a dog. We own a herd of cows and as well as a dog….she never even bothered the cows. Sure, she would play with them (too funny) but never hurt them.
However, please don’t shoot the dog. Have you talked to the owner? I’m assuming you have since you said “I want to avoid murder and the dog’s owner doesn’t..” Well, you should contact the authorities if the dog’s owner refuses to do anything. I have never been in this situation, so I’m not sure…good luck though!

By law you could shoot the dog while it’s on your property. But to be polite you should talk to the neighbor, discuss the cost of the loss of livestock, and reinforce your fencing.

Amen, shoot the dog. Just be sure it’s on your property when you shoot it. As long as the blood trail starts on your property, you’re good…

I don’t know if it’s proper or not, but……
My friend’s dog went next door and plucked all the feathers off the neighbor’s chickens. Dead of winter. Poor chickens must’ve got cold.
Chicken’s owner told my friend that next time, he was gonna shoot her dog. My neighbor said
“Please shoot to kill. I can’t afford any vet bills.”

You call animal control.

Call animal control/cops. They will take care of the problem. I am sure there is a “leash law” as there is in most communities.
Even if there isn’t the dog is on your property and is considered “loose”.
Further, if the dog did kill one of your livestock it would be “put down”. So..
Proper etiquette would be to inform your neighbor that you have found their dog on your property on several occassions and for the protection of your livestock, and that of their dog you are going to have to call animal control the next time you find the animal on your property.

It sounds like a coyote. I believe it is illegal to discharge a firearm for that purpose. check with your sheriff. I would call the animal shelter because the owner will just get another dog (if it is a dog).

i say shoot it if it has killed your livestock or have the owner either chain the dog or put up a fence or have him put the dog down cause there is now excuse for it to kill your livestock
